1 | The Walkman To Help You Get A Headstart On Battling The Winter Food Binge

It’s getting cold and dark outside and those apple pies in the supermarket by the tube station are starting to look better and better. Tackle the winter overindulgence head on with the Sony Walkman NZ-WS610. As well as boasting the catchy name, the Walkman is 100% waterproof, perfect for running home in seasonal downpours, or even perfecting your butterfly stroke (dive-bombing) in the pool. Best of all the whole thing is sans wires, and can be linked to your smartphone via Bluetooth, meaning that as well as listening to music on the run, you can also make a phonecall to ensure that post-workout pizza is waiting for you when you get home.

2 | The Tablet That Gives You Change From £100

Sit down in your nearest Starbucks with your 17inch trusty laptop that you’ve had since the university glory days and you’ll be laughed out of the place faster than you can say “venti pumpkin spice latte”. What you need is a tablet, and preferably one under £100. The Amazon Fire HD 6 can help you. With faster streaming capabilities than its predecessor and a new sturdy exterior, you can now stream books, TV and films as well as downloading up to 8GB worth of content, with an 8 hour battery life to see you through those long winter afternoons. Plus there’s a 2.0MP camera for Instagramming all the times the staff spell your name wrong (#winter).

3 | The Million Dollar Robot Hand

Remember the RoboCop reboot that came out this year? Remember the hollow sense of crushing disappointment and the taste of popcorn-as-ashes-in-your-mouth as you left the cinema? Well it’s time to get over it as RoboCop technology is finally becoming a reality with the new robotic hand from Open Bionics, who are looking to create affordable, wearable tech for the NHS. Created via 3D printing, the project is being developed with a view to winning Intel’s ‘Make It Wearable’ competition, with a grand prize of $1.3m to go towards developing the tech awarded at the final in San Francisco next month. 4 | The Camcorder To Take On Your Next Submarine Trip

The thing with videoing things these days is that it’s become so repetitive. Pull out your iPhone, point it at your mate attempting to eat six meat pies and hit ‘record’. HTC are trying to bring some excitement back to the handheld camera game with their new HTC Re – a ten centimeter handheld camera that looks more than a bit like a submarine’s periscope. The camera shoots 1080 HD video at a 30fps rate, with a 148-degree lens. If that’s not enough, the nautical-themed device also captures slow motion video and can be used as a remote viewfinder for your smartphone. Striped jumpers, anchor tattoos and pipes full of spinach are not required.

5 | The Self-Driving Truck

Think about the last time you were heading home down the M25 at 10pm, one eye on the signs for the next service station and one eye in the rear-view mirror on the lorry that was uncomfortably close behind you. If you’re anything like us, the last thing on your mind would be “I really wish that truck was driving itself”. Mercedes are doing their best to curtail this fear with their ‘Future Truck 2025’. Working along the same lines as automated technology already at use in military and agricultural vehicles, the Future Truck is designed to work give its human driver a break and should reduce the number of traffic accidents caused by fatigue, hopefully saving reducing accidents and therefore getting you home quicker, and in one piece.
