This might sound like a common scam headline - the likes we see on adverts and in our email inboxes claiming we are entitled to money. But this is actually legitimate...

A new report from the government states that there are millions of pounds in forgotten bank accounts waiting to be claimed. This also includes large sums of money from the deceased that have not been accounted for by their next of kin.

Recent estimates by Money Saving Expert show that there is around £850 million in old bank and building society accounts. And there could be up to a whopping £15 billion stored in forgotten Premium Bonds, pensions, investments and insurance policies. The report references the story of one fortunate gentleman who found £39,000 in an old pension fund.

There is so much 'lost' money that the Government has started to use the cash from 15-year dormant accounts by setting up a 'Big Society fund' for social and community help.
