Magic mushrooms are the safest illegal drug to take for a recreational high, even safer than cannabis. According to the new Global Drug Survey, there is less than a 1 percent chance either substance will send a user to the emergency room, statistically speaking, but cannabis retains a slight edge as a more dangerous drug.
The survey, which reported the drug use of over 120,000 participants in 50 countries, found that only .2 percent of mushroom users reported having to seek medical treatment, while .6 percent of marijuana users reported going to the hospital. Synthetic cannabis, however, was the second most dangerous drug, coming in behind methamphetamine in terms of required medical treatment. And of course, alcohol came in third place as the most dangerous drug. It is also the most used drug, which isn't exactly a surprise.
There is no lethal dose of psilocybin, the psychedelic compound in magic mushrooms, as The Guardian notes. Tech wizards (and normal people) use small doses to boost productivity throughout their workdays, a practice commonly called microdosing. There is also research indicating mushrooms could treat severe clinical depression, and it can help people with major social anxiety. All without sending anyone to the emergency room.
So alcohol is very legal and marijuana is basically one step removed from legal, but shrooms are statistically harmless and possibly beneficial. What a weird risk analysis it takes to get high (or drunk).
