The new ten pound note launched last week and you probably have a lot of questions, such as: what does it look like? Who's on it? When exactly is it arriving?

Well, the new plastic note – made of a stronger polymer material – will feature the face of Pride and Prejudice author Jane Austen, and comes into circulation on 14 September.

But if you're one of those people who still actually uses a cash machine and has a flurry of old ten pound notes in various jean and coat pockets, don't worry.

You can still use your old ten pound notes – which should feature the face of Charles Darwin – until the first half of next year, when they will cease to be legal.

So what are the other differences between the old note and the new?

Well, the new plastic-coated British banknote will be stronger, for one (the Bank of England says each new ten pound note should last for around five years, compared with around two years for the paper note it is replacing).

The new bank note will also display helpful information for the blind and partially sighted – and will of course feature the first female figurehead, besides the Queen.

But for now, if you still have a few Darwins on or around your person, get spending.
