If you look really closely at Ryan Gosling's face, and not that we're body shaming here... not at all, but you'll notice that his eyes are quite close together. In fact, if they were even a few centimetres closer together, then we suspect that his status as the most-irresistible movie man on this frail and decaying planet might be challenged. Maybe.

But alas, they're not, and his status remains. Of which we (and Eva Mendes) can surely be thankful.

Now older, wiser, woker (if that was even possible) and once again the cynosure of our cinemas and social media feeds; we revisit The Mighty Gosling and his zeitgeist-shaping appeal, to rediscover just what it is that makes him such a draw, and the lessons to be learnt therein.

We actually really like your eyes, Ryan... sorry about that thing before.

Bring style, versatility and a clenched fist to your tailoring

While we admire both Hardy and Di Caprio immensely for their love of dogs, biscuits, yachts and being tough, their tailoring game isn't quite on the level of Ryan Gosling's.

Whether he's sporting a grey wool three-piece; a navy 'air tie' set-up or turning black tie traditions on their head, you can guarantee that Le Gos' suiting will be effortlessly styled and perfectly cut.

And if you're the kind of guy who feels awkward posing for photos, well, Ryan is too.

But be able to ditch the suit

As illustrated above, our man Gosling knows how to wear a carefully crafted and binded amalgamation of wool, cotton and silk better than anyone out there, but he also knows when it's time to mix things up.

Hover over the links below to see how he nails a more unorthodox look.

Actually, please don't do that. Even if someone's been rude about your mum or criticised your smart new polo shirt.

It really is smart.

After appearing in nine films in four years, in 2013 Ryan Gosling took a self-imposed hiatus, saying: "I've lost perspective on what I'm doing.

"I think it's good for me to take a break and reassess why I'm doing it and how I'm doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that. I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does."

Not that the audience did, but his return has resulted in being a Leading Actor frontrunner for a pleasingly un-terrible (actually very good) turn in La La Land, as well as being named the successor to Ford's Blade Runner throne.

Eat your cereal

Ryan McHenry, the creator of the above viral compilation of Gosling refusing to eat any cereal whatsoever, sadly passed away from cancer in 2015. So what did Gosling do?

He ate his cereal, of course.

Predict the revival of the world's coolest brand

In its latest guise Gucci is a ruffled, embroidered and tiger-motifed behemoth, fronted by an opulent new creative director and worn by the princes, preeners, rappers and socialites of New Hollywood. It's hot right now, is what we're saying.

And who was ahead of that particular curve, post Tom Ford and pre Alessandro Michele? Gosling of course.

Remember the green suit that everyone (at least us, anyway) still talks about?

G U C C I.

And he was rocking it all the way back in 2011.

We're not saying Ryan Gosling is entirely and directly responsible for kickstarting the fortunes of one of the world's most esteemed luxury fashion empires... but we're also not not saying that.

Ladies...

Step 1 - Adopt the kind of ambiguous facial expression that could mean you're about to laugh, or that you're set to snap and burn down a house full of lovely, tiny puppies.

Step 2 - Kind of squint, but only a bit.

Step 3 - Profit!

Give credit where it's due

While most actors use a podium opportunity to spew half-baked, champagne-tinted Trump jibes or navel-gazing nonsense about how the people of South Sudan are just so lucky to have had the opportunity to watch their inspiring performance, Gosling does things differently.

Accepting the Best Actor award at the Golden Globes recently, for his role in La La Land, Gosling sent out a short and poignant salute to his partner, Eva Mendes, saying.

"While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having one of the best experiences I ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.

"If she hadn't taken all that on so that I could have this experience, there would surely be someone else up here other than me today. So sweetheart, thank you."

Well played, Ryan.

Be a really great dancer

Because this will never get old.

Be Ryan Gosling

Cut from the same marble as old school Hollywood men like Paul Newman, Gosling shuns all social media and the fatuous, neon lit cathedral of modern celebrity, instead letting his work do the talking. As well as coming across as a decent, mindful and egalitarian bloke who's nice to his family and doesn't mind having laugh at his own expense, he's really, really well dressed.

All traits that every modern man should aspire to, really.
