In Sweden, the Public Health Agency found that despite campaigns warning Swedes about unsafe sex, gonorrhea infections increased from 2015 to 2016 by about 100 cases. (This may seem small, but so is Sweden.) And besides the infection spreading, treatment options are decreasing, Swedish doctors said.

"The increase is worrying because it could become incurable as multiresistant bacteria grows. For one kind of gonorrhea in particular there is currently only one kind of antibiotic which can cure it," the agency's Elin Jacobsson told The Local, a Swedish news outlet. "People are actively looking for new antibiotics, but we could end up in a situation where the cure which exists stops working."

According to the CDC, gonorrhea has become increasingly successful in fighting off antibiotic treatment. "We have few antibiotic options left that are simple, well-studied, well-tolerated and highly effective," the agency warned. Getting gonorrhea sucked before, but at least a round of pills could have cleared it up. What do we do now?
