The great thing about a tuxedo is that you don't need any embellishment for it to look amazing. As a general rule, the simpler and more classic you go, the more stylish and elegant you look. For proof, look no further than Michael Fassbender at last night's 69th Annual Directors Guild of America Awards.

There's nothing adventurous here—no crazy bow ties, no wild colors, no blooming pocket squares. All that's going on is a perfectly cut, black, peak-lapel tuxedo from Burberry. And Fassbender absolutely kills it.

First off is his flawlessly executed bow tie: not too big or too small, and, most importantly, not crooked. Worn with a covered-placket tuxedo shirt, it's as crisply sophisticated as it gets.

As for the jacket, if you ever want a blueprint for how a tuxedo jacket should fit, download this photo and memorize it. The slim-but-not-tight shape when buttoned, the mathematically precise sleeve lengths that reveal a quarter inch of French-cuff shirt, the quarter inch of white silk pocket square peeking from the jacket pocket. This is maximized elegance right here.

And then, of course, it's all capped off with perfectly tailored trousers and a pair of patent leather oxfords. It's so simple, and yet, judging by every prom photo ever taken, so easy to get wrong. Next time you wear a tux, let young Magneto be your guide. You'll be guaranteed to show up every other guy in the room.
