Vintage Style | Rod Laver

There's more to Rod Laver than self-named trainers and legendary tennis skills. He also had bags of natural style.

Tennis has always been seen as one of the more stylish sports - it's pretty easy to look relatively good decked out in all white - and Rod Laver was a prime example of this. While we could point to his on court attire, there's not much from that you can put into everyday life (unless your office is looking for bellboys).

The V-neck is out of favour at the moment. The V-neck t-shirt has become clothing shorthand for 'douche' and the V-neck jumper has disappeared altogether.

Something needs to be done to right that wrong. Take inspiration from Rod Laver, who's teamed his V-neck with a polo shirt. The key here is to make sure the V-neck isn't too deep, otherwise you slide into douche-ville.

A good choice is this cashmere version from Uniqlo (Uniqlo, £90) . The V-neck isn't too long and it's cashmere, so you'll  avoid the itchy feeling we're sure Rod Laver's feeling in the above picture. As for the matching polo shirt, there's none better than the Sunspel polo shirt (Sunspel, £75) that our current cover star Daniel Craig made popular in Casino Royale.

Finish off the outfit with navy chinos and trainers and you're good to go. You won't be any better at tennis than you were last week but you'll look great. And that comes a close second.
