With 2012 now a month old, it’s probably as good a time as any to start getting used to seeing Olympic themed collaborations, reissues, and special editions all over the blooming place. Adidas Originals have got in on the act early with one of the better throwback items you are likely to see this year.
For sixteen days in the summer of 1984, Daley Thompson displayed more swagger in Los Angeles than any movie star. The decathlete from Notting Hill casually blew away the competition in the games’ most gruelling track and field event.
In the 1500 metres, the decathlon’s final discipline, with the gold medal already in the bag, Daley literally sauntered to the finish linebefore taking his victory lap in a T-shirt that read “Thanks America for a great games” on the front and “But what about the TV coverage?” on the back. A few hours later, Thompson solidified his position as Team GB’s coolest ever athlete by whistling along to “God Save the Queen” from the podium.
The Adidas Originals LA ’84 T-shirt (thankfully not a vest) features embroidered emblems and Thompson’s victorious number 398. Like all things Eighties the Tee is rather tight fitting. So, if your nursing a bit of a post-Christmas belly, you’ve got till the Olympics begin in July to shed those extra pounds. Moustache not included.
