Last weekend, managing director of Cartier UK Laurent Feniou hosted the annual Style et Luxe concours d'elegance at Goodwood Festival of Speed. A celebration of the most stylish and (you guessed it) luxurious cars in the world of motorsport this year's theme was 'Full Throttle – The Endless Pursuit of Power'.

Judged by the likes of Lapo Elkann, Marc Newson, Sir Jonathan Ive and David Gandy the final winner may have been the beautiful Lamborhini Muira SV, but we think the real victors (in the style stakes, at least) were the well dressed gentlemen who turned up on the day. Here are the five style lessons you can learn from the guests at Cartier's Style et Luxe concourse d'elegance.

1 | A granddad shirt is the only shirt you should be wearing right now

Ably demonstrated by Lord Settrington – a linen collarless shirt teamed with a lightweight three-piece suit in a pale shade looks chic, warm weather-ready and won't feel over-done (as three piece suits can).

2 | Summer is all about knitted ties

Lord March has got it spot on here – his knitted navy silk tie, pale blue shirt and cream single breasted suit combination looks elegant and summery without feeling silly.

3 | Anyone can wear white jeans

OK, so Lapo Elkann looks good in whatever he wears, but here both Cartier Managing Director Laurent Feniou and Elkann both prove that white jeans are the only way to go this summer – just be sure to keep them slim and, most importantly, clean.

4 | A good tan will win you points

As demonstrated by Ferrari Design Director Flavio Manzoni (driving a great car can help too).

5 | You don't always need to wear a jacket

If the recent menswear shows in Milan and Paris were anything to go by, now is the era of the field jacket. Not just for wear at the weekend, a well-cut safari or field jacket can look the business teamed with a pair of tailored trousers and and a tie – just look at la Gandy, who got the look spot on.
