6 Autumn Jackets Stylish Men Know About

From Flight to Field to lightweight Macs, the best jackets for when the weather doesn't know what it's doing

Dressing in September, much like spring, can be a tricky art to master. The weather can range from terrible, to bad, to blazing hot Riviera and then back to terrible by way of torrential rain.

So when it comes to your outwear in these capricious in-between months, you're going to want to be focusing on lightweight, durable or - if need be - waterproof materials that can handle any sartorial scenario.

With that in mind, we've picked out the six types of transitional jackets, from suede truckers to nylon bombers, that will carry you through autumn and beyond in style.

1 | MA-1 Bomber Jacket

Initially designed for US Air Force fighter pilots as a replacement for their heavyweight shearling flight jackets, the MA-1 bomber was noted for its slim design that didn't take up too much room in a cramped cockpit, as well as for its nylon construction, making it hard wearing, waterproof and good for all seasons.

Since then it has been appropriated by everyone from skinheads to streetwear fans, with a particular surge in popularity occurring over the last year.

Opt for one in a classic, neutral shade like army green or dark grey and match with slim denim and a plain black t-shirt for an easy autumn look.

2 | Harrington Jacket

An icon that has been sported by the likes of Elvis Presley, Steve McQueen and - most famously - James Dean, the Harrington is still as slick now as it was when it first left the Baracuta (the original makers) factory in Manchester back in 1937.

One of the most versatile jackets out there, a quality Harrington in either navy or red is one of those rare staples that will never be phased out of fashion.

3 | Cord Trucker Jacket

If you like the cut and style of a denim jacket, but feel - like a lot of men - that it doesn't quite match your personal style, then swapping out a brighter shade of denim for a darker cord can be a strong and seasonal alternative.

As well as looking  particularly good in shades of brown, grey and black - perfect autumn colours - cord also improves with wear and age, meaning you don't need to worry about exposing it to heavy usage nor the elements, which you'll inevitably be seeing a lot of this time of year.

4 | Lightweight Mac

The staple of noir spies and old fashioned businessmen, a single-breasted Mac in a light cotton offers a contemporary update on the classic tied-at-the-waist trench coat.

An ideal transitional jacket for the work week, a mac in black, navy or stone grey has the benefit of being able to keep out the rain without becoming frustratingly hot or cumbersome.

5 | Field Jacket

Another benefactor of the recent military wear trend is the once humble field jacket - or M-65 if we're going with the proper terminology - which first appeared in the trenches of WW1 before gaining mass appeal after the end of the Vietnam war, where it showed up in surplus stores across America.

Typically made out of a sturdy cotton canvas, wear it loose in either olive or beige, with military boots and selvedge denim for a laid-back grunge look.

6 | Suede Jacket

If you're looking for a luxe autumn jacket, but can't really see yourself in leather (don't worry, you're not alone), then a cropped suede jacket in camel or dark brown is a safe and stylish bet.

Wear it with dark brown or black Chelsea boots and textured knits (maybe even a polo neck?) for a warm tonal outfit.
