Mahershala Ali recently won an Oscar for being really, really good in a little film called Moonlight, but aside from all that day job business, he is also a remarkably well-dressed man; one with an easy mastery of colour, silhouette and risky tailoring. Skills that were employed with devastating effect for this latest out-there outift choice.

At 43, Ali - along with the likes of Pharrell - is paving the way for a more mature brand of extravagance... but you've got to have some serious confidence if you want to pull off the previously unthinkable beanie and suit combo.

Mahershala Ali, Big Sean and his disconcertingly well-groomed beard

If you can, for just a moment, put aside his high cheekbones, kind eyes and slim yet athletic frame, the reason this outfit works so well for Mahershala is that he hasn't added the beanie as part of a formal look - a move that would look incongruous and a bit 'try-hard' - but has instead used it as a final flourish to accessorise a slick, casual take on tailoring where it doesn't look out of place.

It also helps, as it always does, that his suit is cut just right. That and the fact that the hat (repeat that after three beers) matches well with the navy.

While we might stop and admire this on a man with Mahershala's style credentials, we can't say that we'd recommend replicating such a bold move in the wild.

This is a man, after all, who can pull off all-white eveningwear.
