5 Style Lessons You Can Learn From Daniel Craig

As he hits 48, we look at the art of staying sharp as you get older

Most Popular

Just turning 48, Daniel Craig is the embodiment of a man who is comfortable in his own skin.

There's no fuss or affectation here and you rarely seen him stray from a few core outfits that he rotates depending on the occasion. He's proof of the old adage that one of the advantages of getting older is that you know yourself better. You know what suits you and you keep it simple.

He's probably learnt the hard way about what works and what doesn't, he's too busy to spend time messing about deciding what goes with what and knows that buying into trends or shopping without a plan rarely ends well.

They are lessons that are particularly pertinent at 48, but are pretty useful to take on board at any age:

1 Think in tried and tested outfits

Most Popular

Craig's outfits rarely change. On-duty it's perfectly tailored two-button suits in classic combinations - suits in grey and navy, with white and pale blue shirts and classic tie combinations.

When dressing down, he can almost always be spotted in selvedge jeans, brown desert or chukka boots, navy knits and classic jackets and coats.

Simple, appropriate and damned effective.

2 Know what suits you

Craig is fair and blue-eyed so navy, grey and dark greens are never far away. You just don't see him in pales and reds because it doesn't have the same impact. His stocky build suits fitted shirts and knits and he has a classic crop haircut that hasn't budged for a decade. Know thyself - and build your wardrobe around it.

3 Buy classic pieces instead of trends

You have to imagine Daniel's wardrobe (we're picturing a walk-in, let's be honest) will be entirely made up of menswear classic staples that have always worked and will continue to work for years to come. Harringtons, pea coats, navy blazers, shawl neck knits, oxford shirts, leather bombers - you get the idea. Masculine pieces that worked in Steve McQueen's day and are guaranteed to hit the right notes today.

4 Invest in the best

When you only keep a core wardrobe built around a few simple items, you better make sure the pieces you do own are of the right quality to speak for themselves. As you'd expect from the man who plays James Bond, in Craig's case they always are from the big pieces right down to the accessories. Quality will always lift a simple look into something much more than the sum of its parts.

5 Stay in shape

The best advice for looking good as you get older is also one of the hardest to maintain and requires the most discipline. But being in shape and keeping the spare tyre off is simply the best way to make clothes hang better and create a more youthful impression.

If you don't have a team of personal trainers on hand to keep you at under 10% body fat like Daniel, you can always read the 9 Food Rules For Getting Rid Of Your Spare Tyre.
