5 Style Lessons You Can Learn From Zayn Malik

From buzz cuts to power coats

Once 1/5 of that boyband that did quite well a while ago, Zayn Malik has since pulled a full Robbie and spread his wings solo, becoming the first UK male artists to debut at number one in America after the release of his new album Mind of Mine.

While his music may not be your thing, what you can't argue against is his grasp on style and trends.

With that in mind, we show you the five key lessons you can pick up from Bradford's finest fashion export.

1

Keep an eye on trends

Trends are a tricky one. Ignore them and you're out of touch, wholeheartedly embrace them and you become a Topman tragedy waiting to happen.

Here Zayn tows a (very) fine line, but somehow pulls it off, mixing in the SS16 heavy-hitters of luxury sportswear and a light bomber jacket, all in the season's biggest colour: green.

2

Find yourself a power coat

Take away the immaculate coat and this outfit is vanilla: fine, but entirely ordinary. This goes to show the impact that a signature overcoat can have on a man's look and confidence.

Invest in one that's good quality and fits just right and you'll hardly be able to conceal the extra spring that will inevitably find its way into your step.

3

Change up your chop

We wouldn't strictly recommend going for the bleached look - all a bit Eminem circa 2001- but if there's one thing Zayn Malik does particularly well, it's sorting out his barnet.

Over the years we've seen Mr Malik sport everything from buzz cuts to man-buns, proving that the 'one cut fits all' mantra isn't necessarily for every man. If you're in need of some inspiration, then we've got that covered too.

Give a nod to the classics

It's a debate as old as time, and one we here at Esquire HQ have had more than once: To turtleneck? Or not to turtleneck?

It may all seem a bit 'failed jazz musician', but changing up your regular white shirt for a turtleneck, especially in the colder months, can add just the right amount of old school cool to an otherwise run-of-the-mill getup. Especially when paired with a sharp double-breasted jacket.

5

Learn From Your Mistakes

It's reassuring to know that beneath the St Laurent, Dior and Paris Fashion Week front rows, Zayn was once just a boy from Bradford, wearing dodgy high-tops and a faux leather jacket to buy a strawberry Friji and some Wotsits from Sainsburys.

Fortunately for us, our every style mistake hasn't been archived by the press, but at least we have Zayn to show us the way and prove that we all have sartorial improvement within our grasp. Although it does help when you have loads of money.
