A recent episode of Boardwalk Empire got us thinking about the merits of owning a good grandad collar shirt. It's not as hard to pull of as we're constantly led to believe.
Where did it come from? Essentially the creation of factory workers, the granddad collar was something that happened by accident. Before the granddad collar existed all collars were large and by today's standards, oversized.
This led to problems when workers caught their collars in their machines, causing serious injuries. To combat this, the workers simply ripped the collar area from their shirts, creating the granddad collar as we know it today. It also explains why the only people who you'll see wearing granddad collars in Boardwalk Empire are factory and low level workers.
The collar has always been described as hard to wear but in reality it's not that hard - just wear it with a cardigan and you'll be fine. Folk are one of the more notable designers making granddad collar shirts, with Albam making a few nice ones.
Despite the popularity of workwear, the granddad collar shirt remains an untapped resource, which is good if you want to stand out an inch but not a mile. And, most importantly, you won't have to get coal on your face to complete the look. (£120, MRPORTER)
