There was just one question when we discovered Unis - where can we buy this in the UK? Founded by Eunice Lee, the New York label's clothing are everything the modern man would want - durable, wearable and stylish. And this is the first season you'll be able to buy the clothes without paying import tax.
Now officially stocked in The Shop in Bluebird, we decided to ask Eunice what took them so long.
How come the move into Europe hasn't happened sooner?
Unis has been a cultish, underground brand for the last 10 years. The interest for the brand hasn't really started to grow overseas until just recently. It's a combination of the popularity of that "Preppy-American look" and the CFDA Best American Menswear Designer nomination. I was a finalist and it became a big part of spreading the brand's awareness. I didn't win, but I think people secretly were rooting for me and Unis. I was also the first woman to have been nominated- a real honour! It's important to have some momentum and press to support any kind of expansion into new territory.
Why did you choose The Shop at Bluebird as your first European retailer?
Timing and trend has a lot to do with why it's taken so long for Unis to finally get to Europe. So when I wanted to start dipping my toe in that part of the ocean, we carefully researched stores in London and The Shop at Bluebird was THE store I wanted to see Unis in. They have an amazing selection of menswear brands that I thought Unis would fit nicely with. They have also been such a pleasure to work with!
Is it true that you used to deliver your shipments into stores yourself?
Haha! The answer is YES! Hey, when you own your own business, you roll your sleeves up and do whatever you have to do to get the job done. All my employees are expected to do the same. You don't want your boss lifting heavier boxes than you! I don't hire wimps, if I do, they don't last very long here. I shipped most of my Spring production out of LA - so most of the LA store orders were hand delivered by myself or one of my assistants.
