Trying to get some positive PR for the French national football team after their World Cup debacle and the subsequent behaviour of their senior pros must be a thankless task, but at least their new away kit might get a few admiring glances.
Based on the classic French naval uniform, the 'mariniere', the shirt stands out as one of the cleanest, simplest and most stylish football tops around. Admittedly the competition in this arena isn't strong, but alongside England's recent polo design it represents a trend towards less garish patterns and overly complex detailing.
None other than Karl Lagerfeld photographed the image of midfielder Alou Diarra (above) in an attempt to give the launch some fashion credentials while using Bordeaux's Diarra to help present the new generation of French football. Nicolas Anelka must have been unavailable. The kit will be available from March 26 and pre-ordered from March 11, on www.nikestore.com and www.fff.fr
