Not quite smart enough to be paired with a suit, not quite relaxed enough to work with denim, the duffel coat is tricky to get right.
It's the hood. Yet to prove itself a viable addition to an outfit, the hood's sole purpose, apart from keeping out the cold (pah), is to "relax" the jumper/jacket/shirt/blazer it comes pared with. The truth is, almost universally, that it just makes you look a bit sloppy, and dare we say, childish.
Thankfully, the latest collaboration between YMC and Gloverall seems to have struck a balance. Simple enough, in shades of navy and chocolate brown, the "Monty" duffle coat - complete with fastenings in leather instead of classic rope - is the best duffle of the season. Pare the navy version it with an oatmeal shawl-collar jumper (we like The Gap's version) for an adult take on the look.
