Le Ross, Le Blog - I'm so 'tie' rd!

When we anointed Ross Hancock best-dressed man in Britain a few months back, little did we know what we'd let ourselves in for. Like an eccentric dandy uncle, Hancock hopped skipped and jumped into our lives, and it looks like he's here to stay...

The tie; whether it's kipper, a skinny 60s number, a cravat, a bowtie, or even a bolo, for most of the 9-5 crew, they’re just different versions of the same pain in the neck.

But should it be that way? The tie has a heritage as rich as the suit, but we stick on a tie for work or a cravat for a wedding, but we never really treat them as an accessory that can be styled-up day-to-day.

Back in the early 19th century, the original bad boy dandy himself, Beau Brummell, would re-style his cravat as many as three times a day. Then in the 1920s Jean Patou (the unsung design hero of the era who spent his life in the shadow of Chanel) came up with the first ever ‘designer’ tie.

Since then we’ve seen everything from skinny to fat, ties that squirt water to knitted, squared-off ties. But they still don’t really float my boat. And why, oh why, oh why are they so bloody long?! (I always cut the ends off mine – don’t need to tuck my tie in my socks thanks.)

Here’s a few alternative ways to wear ties which you're unlikely to see in the boardroom -

1 Cut the end off your tie and stick an Andy Warhol banana sticker to it!

2 Pin up your tie to create a wavy effect. You can pin this as many or as little times as you want depending on how dramatic you want to go.

3 Wear a smart, slim tie over your collar instead of under it and add a tie pin.

4 Instead of a classic bowtie, which is a right faff to get right anyway, just tie one of your regular ties in a massive bow.

5 Who says you only have to wear one tie? Wear two – put them on together and arrange the multiple ends however you want.
