Last month we digested news of Billionaire Boys Club’s collaboration with Jermyn Street shirtmaker Turnbull & Asser, and tacitly made the assumption that Pharrell’s dabble with formal clothing represented an aberration. However, the latest shots of Pharrell have forced a re-think. The photograph was taken to promote the hat, a bowler co-designed and produced with milliner Stephen Jones, but the hat’s just the icing on the cake.
Obviously it helps that Pharrell is a handsome superstar, but nonetheless his outfit, which is a full BBC look, is the single best ensemble we’ve seen in a long time; there’s a laudable whiff of Eighties Uptown hip-hop style about it. We’re particularly taken with the heavy tan herringbone suit, and the way that it’s been cut with a long jacket and short tapered trousers with chunky turn-ups, but the sock-free navy trainers provide a nice contrast. It’s not a look many of us could reasonably emulate, but it’s inspirational despite that.
