How to Do Summer Smart

Most Popular

Get summer smart. Actor Reece Ritchie shows you how.

If the sun’s out, the last place you want to find yourself is buttoned up in a closely fitted suit. Esquire’s advice for summer: loosen up in light, bright and elegant essentials that can be worn as easily at the weekend as they can to work — as long as you don’t work in a bank.

Here fast-rising British actor Reece Ritchie (The Lovely Bones; Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) shows how to look sharp and stay cool. That’s a mantra he’ll need to remember, because Ritchie’s generating heat of his own.

This summer he takes his first lead role, in All in Good Time (out now), the new film from the writer of East is East. Ritchie plays Atul, a newlywed trying to consummate his marriage under his parents’ roof. “It was fun because Atul’s nothing like me,” says Ritchie. “He finds it hard to assert himself.”

Ritchie, on the other hand, doesn’t lack for confidence. Which is lucky, given we asked him to wear these shorts. “I’m more of a three-quarter length man,” he says. “Those bad boys made me feel I was going for a picnic in Chelsea!” We take it this is a good thing, obviously.

01 - Flash some ankle (top left)
The cropped trouser is back for another season. Choose a bright chino, roll the hems and team with loafers and a bomber for a smart, understated look.

02 - Yes, shorts can work (top right)
The three rules with shorts are that they must be tailored, not remotely creased, and cut a few inches above the knee — no more, no less. Team with a long-sleeved shirt and a blazer to keep them looking smart. Good legs will help.

03 - Go on, go collarless (left)
It’s far easier to appear smart wearing an open-necked grandad-collar shirt than it is with an unbuttoned cutaway collar. Wear with relaxed chinos, a tailored jacket and coloured socks to brighten up the look.

04 - Ditch The shirt completely (right)
Many people are afraid of wearing T-shirts to the office for fear of looking scruffy. But a striped T-shirt worn with a sharp jacket, a bright pair of trousers and a punctuating pocket square will look louche and smart.
A good pair of loafers will work wonders here, too.
