How To Wear A Summer Scarf

Draping an extra layer of fabric around your neck in the middle of June might sound a little bit off. But trust us, a light, simple style will lift any outfit and add a touch of nonchalant cool. Here's how to pull one off

The summer scarf has long been a contentious subject among men’s style commentators (we have an awful lot to think about, you know).

How, when the weather is warm, is it possible to justify such an insulating addition? First, British summertime can never be relied upon to provide any heat.

Second, a light, simple scarf in cotton, silk or linen can deliver much-needed warmth when the sun does go down, should the season in question ever rear its head.

For S / S ’14, the runways were awash with floaty under-layers, worn beneath double-breasted suits at Gucci and Berluti; tied loose in place of shirts at Emporio Armani and Haider Ackermann, and draped louchely under pea coats, leather jackets and trenches at Hermès.

Here’s how to wear one yourself.

1 | This is not a pocket square, so make sure it has enough length and width to give some purchase; 1m x 0.5m should do the trick.

2 | Opt for a light fabric; anything too stiff or thick will look bulky and make you sweat.

3 | Wear the scarf over a T-shirt and for the best effect wear a double or one-and-a-half-breasted blazer on top.

4 | Fold the scarf diagonally into a triangle and drape around your neck; let the two pointed ends hang loose.

5 | The scarf should sit at the nape of your neck an inch above the lapel of the jacket and around the same width down the inside of each lapel.

6 | It shouldn’t look too neat, so ensure that some folds remain in the scarf. Opt for a tonal shade to complement your shirt/T-shirt.
