Ralph Lauren's British Influences

We asked the designer to select five pieces influenced by British culture

Think of Ralph Lauren and you’ll almost certainly envision the "stars and stripes" rather than the Union Jack. However, Lauren is equally influenced by British style as he is by that of his native US.

“England has always inspired my style and designs, and my respect for things that have a quality the more they are worn. The British have a true appreciation for heritage and tradition. In America, if you discovered a hole in a sweater, you threw it out. In England you put a patch on it and passed it on to your son,” says Lauren.

“This has always inspired me as I design collections, as I’m about things that you own and keep, that you cherish. I also like the diversity of wearing different things — you can wear a wonderful luxury blazer or jacket with a utility pant or denim — and I believe a look like that is the essence of what style means today.”

This summer, Lauren is making a trip to our green and pleasant land to attend a gala dinner at Windsor Castle celebrating the work of world renowned cancer hospital, The Royal Marsden.

To mark this rare visit, we asked the designer to select five pieces from his latest collections that best embody a British influence. Click through the gallery to see Ralph's picks.
