Style Winter Rules No 7

Be weatherproof

With constant advances in waterproof fabrics and brands increasingly aware of the need for stylish weather-ready clothing, the days of the bin bag-esque rain poncho are over.

British label Mackintosh produces beautiful jackets in rubberised fabrics, with backing tapes on all seams and glue-fixed linings making them entirely waterproof.

Add a pair of stylish waterproof brogues from Norwegian brand Swims, a waxed cotton, leather-bottomed backpack from Ally Cappelino and a quality umbrella from Fox’s, and you’re all set to defeat the downpours.

TIP: If you insist on wearing your regular shoes in the winter, get a cobbler to add rubber soles. This will prevent leather soles being ruined by salt, snow and rain, and will give better grip on icy surfaces. Protect footwear with an effective winter waterproofing compound, such as Obenauf’s Heavy Duty Leather Preservative.
