Just as Google begins its assault on Apple's smartphone market dominance with the Pixel, it looks like Apple is keen to challenge their tech rivals on a completely different front: self-driving cars.
Google has been working on a range of autonomous vehicles, mostly electric, for half a decade – but, as The Guardian reports, a recent letter to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that Apple is not about to let Google race ahead of the pack.
Reportedly titled 'Project Titan', it's not clear yet whether Apple plans to actually manufacture the cars or just get involved on the hardware and software front.
In the letter, Apple's product director of integrity Steve Kenner says, "there are many potential applications for these technologies, including the future of transportation, so we want to work with NHTSA to help define the best practices for the industry."
