Want List

Tablet Computers

Esquire's tech guide continues - here we take a look at three top tablets.

1. APPLE IPAD MINI (above)

Behold 7.9 perfectly formed inches of Apple’s touch-sensitive glory. This addition to the iDevice lineup was no shock to anyone in the world, however this new smaller, thinner version feels good in the hand, is even lighter than it looks and the screen is plenty big enough for games and video. An iPad you will actually want to carry around. Cost still too high? Come on, this is Apple – they were never going to suit up for a price war.

2. GOOGLE NEXUS 7

Google’s entry into the mini-tablet market is hardly likely to improve the already frosty relations between the search engine and the mighty Apple, who used the launch of their iPad Mini to list the pitfalls of the Nexus 7. But what this 7in marvel lacks (the big issue being that the initial run is wifi only), it makes up for with a resplendent screen and very accessible price.

3. KINDLE FIRE HD

“Brilliant,” you say, “now I can read all my favourite books in HD.” Well, yes, but with this 7in tablet you can also stream films (the Fire HD comes with a month’s free trial of LoveFilm Instant), play music (Amazon’s Cloud Player gives you access to 20 million songs, and the Fire HD’s built-in speakers are great), and browse the web. Plus, there’s a free lending library for books (but without late fees or surly librarians to tell you to, “shhh!”).
