The best of CES 2011

Over the last 48 hours, we've been scouring the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas to find the technological gems that will be on everyone's wish lists over the coming year (hint: more tablets, 3D devices and smart TVs, for starters). Here's our shortlist of the gadgets to look out for:

1 Samsung D8000 LED TV (above)

Last year, South Korea's home entertainment gurus dazzled us with a TV no thicker than an HB pencil. This year, they've managed to all but remove the border of their exceptional 8000 Series LED to leave a vast, pleasing expanse of screen. The 3D image quality is noticably sharper (and flicker-free too), while the ability to enjoy smart TV apps, onscreen web browsing, and dual-channel telly viewing via a touchscreen remote only cement its appeal. And, yes, the regulation 3D goggles have also undergone a timely redesign. samsung.co.uk

2 Motorola Atrix mobile phone

Motorola Atrix 4G

Motorola has struggled for form since the halcyon days of the Razr, but this week it has fired two hefty broadsides at its competitors. The first is the Xoom tablet (an Android-powered touchscreen device that should give Apple a run for its money). The second: the Atrix. Unlike other smartphones before it, the Atrix uses a powerful dual-core processor and 4G connectivity for PC-level functionality you can fit in your pocket. Better still, Motorola will simultaneously launch a laptop shell into which you slot the handset to transform it into a fully functioning portable computer. It even charges the phone while you're at it. motorola.com/gb

3 The House of Marley earphones

EarBud

Following in a long line of successful-musician-related headphone lines comes The House of Marley, a new brand from the godfather of reggae (or, at least, his surviving relatives) that deftly blends high quality acoustics with admirable eco credentials. The collection will comprise a number of colourful headsets and iPod docks, but the Iron earbuds (above) get our vote, for their unlikely yet effective marriage of  ascetic industrial design with a reggae-stripe cord. thehouseofmarley.com

4 Toshiba Android tablet

Toshiba Tablet

Toshiba's last attempt at a tablet PC, the Folio 100, was an unmitigated disaster. Luckily their next one is powered by Anroid's new Honeycomb operating system, a platform designed exclusively for tablets. Its other quirks include front- and back-facing cameras, a bigger-than-the-iPad 10.1 in screen and a slew of sockets, from USBs to memory card, and even an output for your HD TV. toshiba.co.uk

5 Casio Tryx camera

Casio Exilim Tryx

The Tryx may not the most powerful camera we've seen at CES this year (Fujifilm's FinePix X100 earns that particular accolade), but it's certainly the most original. Using a sealed 21mm wideangle lens and 4x optical zoom, this 12MP camera/full HD camcorder can be twisted in any direction to ensure you get just the right angle, and the external frame doubles as a useful grip. exilim.co.uk

6 LG ST600 SmartTV upgrader

LG ST600

Smart TVs have dominated this week's proceedings, as more and more brands pin their hopes on us using our TV screens for a multitude of tasks - from onscreen weather apps to video on demand, media streaming and web browsing. LG has rather wisely designed a diminutive plug-and-play box that will deliver these next generation goodies to any older television with an HDMI socket. And at around £200, it's considerably more cost-effective than buying a brand new set. lg.com/uk
