Now we’ve been duped into believing this could be the real deal, the “bbq summer" we’ve been promised for the past 34 years, we’ve got beer gardens and bare flesh on the brain.

If your seasonal tastes are more civilised, the new cafe in Chiswick House gardens could be for you. The latest venture from Caruso St John Architects injects a dose of contemporary je ne sais quoi into this corner of West London.

A marked contrast to the imposing 18th century villa which dominates the grounds, the modernist café has been constructed in pale stone and designed with al fresco dining in mind. The interior, in all its pared-down concrete-y-ness brings to mind Very Good & Proper’s chain of "Canteen" restaurants, which can only be a good thing.
