The pesky thing about most hi-fi speakers is that in the pursuit of great sound, aesthetics usually go out the window. It’s easy enough to house the electronics in a suitably sleek or industrial looking but when it comes to the big boxes in the corner of the room – well, that’s usually what they look like.

So, fans as we are of UK audiophile company Meridian’s active speaker range we were overjoyed (well, we grinned slightly more than usual) when we heard the company had introduced Meridian Select. The scheme basically gives you the chance to choose the speakers you want in any colour you want.

Meridian says the idea is that the colours can match that of your car, springing, as they do, from automotive paint finishes. But unless you’re the kind of guy who parks his car in the living room (we did it accidentally a couple of times in our younger days, it’s not to be recommended) we think you’ll want to use the colours on offer (and there are hundreds) to blend or complement your existing living space style. And, as an added bonus, Meridian also offer the Select service on all products from the 800 series - including CD and DVD players and an amplifier.

It’s Meridian, so prices aren’t budget (£2,000 to £20,000) but at least you’ll have something that’s unique (they’ll also put your name on it if you ask nicely). Build time is six weeks and you’ll be sent a sample to OK before Meridian goes to work.
