James Bond's Next Ride

The next car in Bond's garage, The Aston Martin Vanquish, packs a precision punch.

Just as Skyfall lands to mark Bond’s return, so Aston Martin’s new flagship model is set to make its debut on these shores.

While we already know that Daniel Craig gets behind the wheel of a vintage DB5 in the latest Bond movie, the brand new Vanquish, which will replace the DBS as Aston’s range-topping sports car, looks an even better fit for a man of his exacting standards.

This burly Grand Tourer’s upgraded and hand-built six-litre V12 engine produces 565bhp, propelling it from 0–62mph in just 4.1 seconds, and on to a top speed of 183mph, promising to be as capable chasing down targets on twisty roads as on straight ones.

It’s a little showy for a government ride but the new Vanquish does confirm a shift in design direction for Aston Martin, first glimpsed in the limited edition £1.2m One-77 and now trickled down to this £190k production model.

In the metal, the Vanquish projects a lot more attitude than the refined and well-mannered looks of its existing garage mates. Maybe it’s the precisely creased side strakes, the heavily-muscled haunches, the exposed carbon side-skirts or the rear aero duct, but it all adds up to just the right side of badass.

Owners get the choice of keeping the zero-legroom 2+2 backseat or pulling it out altogether for a snug two-seater coupé. There’s also a bigger boot, perfect for sniper rifles, dinner jackets and trips to the supermarket.

It’ll be made in Britain at Aston’s Gaydon plant using a new carbon platform, giving it a lighter and stiffer body; available, naturally, in Skyfall Silver, as well as Bridgewater Bronze (above).

Taking its cues from the One-77, the car’s interior feels sleeker with upgrades like the new infotainment system delivering a level of gadgetry drivers expect but haven’t always received.

One classic Aston touch remains: the glass key dock in the front that is pushed in to set the V12 rumbling. There are few better experiences to have in a car. Even Bond would agree.

Aston Martin Vanquish:

Engine: 6.0-litre V12
0-62mph: 4.1 secs
Top Speed: 183mph
Power: 565bhp
Price: £189,500
