Esquire’s favourite Aquarian and sociopath film director David Lynch has managed to surprise us again – this time by choosing a sleepy Cornwall café as the only UK outlet for his range of organic coffees, the packaging for which features a rather fetching close up of his nose.
“Coffee always plays a big part in Lynch’s films - Twin Peaks and Mulholland Drive especially - and as we have an arts café we thought it would be a fun thing to serve,” says Dan Bennett who runs The Old Boatstore Café with his dad, Michael. As you’d expect of arts café proprietors, both are big fans of the director’s work.
Lynch is known to drink 20 cups of coffee a day, which could explain why the taste of his brew is smooth – not leaving the consumer at all Wild At Heart. In fact, the director compares the organic Mexican brew to “the powerful smoothness of a 12-cylinder engine.”
Whether it leaves the drinker with surreal, nightmarish visions couldn’t be confirmed as Esquire went to blog. However, we have it on good authority that the “dark” roast brews up with a good (eraser) head and has a texture like blue velvet. Meanwhile, baristas at the café are perfecting how to get the perfect twin peaks on the micro foam atop the espresso. (OK, we’ll leave it alone now.)
Unground beans are also available on Lynch's website where a portion of the proceeds go to the David Lynch film Scholarship Fund at the American Film Institute Center for Advanced Film Studies - a cover organisation, Esquire suspects, for a bunch of cine camera-carrying sleep-averse slackers, zipped to their crowns on high-octane caffeine.
