Tony Lewis, Esquire's fashion editor at large, selects his five favourite independent men's clothes shops. Let us know what you think or send us your own recommendations by following us on Twitter at esquireuk.

The Bureau, Belfast: Influenced by the rugged backdrop to the city, this deceptively small store (above) mixes an impressive array of styles for the great outdoors, and my favourites include the checked and plaid shirts by Paul Smith. The Bureau celebrates its 20th anniversary this December. (46-50 Howard Street, Belfast, BT1 6PG. Tel: 0289 0326 100)

Matches, London: Catering for the fashionably affluent, the Matches menswear department has a great edit of cool trainers from high-end international designers such as Lanvin, giving the more mature fashion client access into the street-trend footwear market. (Stores in Marylebone, Mayfair, Notting Hill, Richmond and Wimbledon)

Autograph, Birmingham: A small, well established independent store that's been around for over 20 years, Autograph buys in small amounts to ensure their offering remains selective and stylishly individual. I particularly love their oversized V-neck hand knits from  designers such as Dries Van Noten and Neil Barrett. (15-17 Ethel Street, Birmingham, B2 4BG. Tel: 012 1633 3540)

Start, London: Offering a wide range of classic denim jeans from a well-balanced collection of designers (Nudie and PRPS stand out for me), this is a store - with, crucially, staff - that makes the tricky task of buying jeans an altogether more rewarding experience.  (59 Rivington Street, London, EC2A 3BN. Tel: 020 7739 3636)

Oi polloi, Manchester: Specialising in outerwear - I love their Universal Works Mountain Jacket for it’s well-designed fashion/functionality - this is the place for mountain hiking boots and accessories. The store also has a nice selection of smaller, trinket items that work well as gifts. (70 Tib Street, Manchester, M4 1LG. Tel: 016 1831 7870)
