Here at Esquire we’re nearly obsessed with desert boots – as you may know. So the arrival of an innovative low-cut desert boot (lets call it a desert shoe) has been met with interest and some consternation.

Initially we were tempted to ask who Hiroshi Takahashi thinks he is to go re-inventing a British classic, but on reflection the Croute Shoe might work well with smart shorts (but without socks, obviously). Although we’re not really sure yet whether these Verginia Footwear shoes represent progress or not they are a useful alternative to the desert boot, and evidence that fashion never sleeps. £95 www.oipolloi.com
