Ok, we're a little reluctant to recommend a company that makes ballet shoes, but with Repetto we have to make an exception. The French marque's white mens' lace-ups are bordering on summer shoe nirvana.

For a start, Gallic crooner and king of louche, Serge Gainsbourg, is rumoured to have gone through as many as 30 pairs a year, which admittedly could either be taken as an illustration of his fond feelings or a damning indictment of their durability.

Either way, this is a shoe that can be worn with shorts, jeans or trousers and are as soft and comfortable as... alright, a ballet shoe. But in a good way. Repetto shoes, £165,  at Poste (0207 499 8002)
