There aren’t many contemporary cars that look exactly right. In fact there’s only a handful (BMW’s M3 also comes to mind) but pre-eminent is the Lamborghini Gallardo, which continues to look like the most modern car on the road, even though it was launched six years ago.
Since 2003 then, with our purist (occasionally luddite) approach to cars, we've been able to console ourselves with the thought that while we can’t afford a Gallardo it doesn’t matter because it is, inappropriately, four-wheel drive.
This safety net has been removed with the introduction of the LP 550-2 Valentino Balboni, which is entirely desirable. The 550 refers to the output of the 5.2 litre V10 engine, the 2 refers to the fact that it’s two-wheel drive and Valentino Balboni is the name of Lambo’s veteran test driver, a man who’s been involved with the development of the world’s most outrageous sports cars since 1967.
