Aside from The Botanist, there’s a dearth of decent lunch places around Chelsea, so we were pleased to find that The Mess - formerly the old Duke of York's officers' mess, now the eatery attached to the new Saatchi gallery - is a stylish little spot serving up good British food (pea soup, asparagus, grilled chicken, seafood pasta and the like).

Works of art (available to buy, commission free) are displayed on the brickwork walls, while the shelves of perfectly aligned champagne in the bar make for a suitably sleek backdrop. And with the large glass panelled doors open, it's also an airy spot to escape the antics on the King's Road. Saatchi Gallery, Duke of York's HQ, King’s Road, London SW3 (+44 20 7730 8135)
