When we first drove the Renault Twizy last May, we loved it for its bonkers looks, maverick concept and the all-round smile-inducing experience of driving one.
Now Renault has announced an even crazier idea - glueing it on to the wheels of a single-seater race car and equipping it with a front splitter, side-pods, rear wing and a diffuser complete with an F1-style rain light.
Just an attention-grabbing concept? Not according to Renault. It also delivers pant-darkening performance, thanks to its Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) used by Renault-powered Formula 1 cars, which boosts power output six-fold to almost 100 horsepower. That equates to 0- 62 mph acceleration which matches Renault’s highest-performing road car, Mégane Renaultsport 265.
“We always said we wanted to create F1-derived technology that was road relevant," says Jean-Michel Jalinier (President and Managing Director, Renault Sport F1). "Hopefully, this Twizy will make a few people smile while also making a serious point."
It's definitely making us smile, even if driving one sounds like the act of the borderline insane.
