Rumours about the latest iPhone have long been catnip for online geeks and technophiles, and the iPhone 5S – expected to be unveiled to the world at an event next month – is no exception.

As infuritating as Apple Worship has become over the past 3 years, we’re not immune to the buzz either.

This, after all, is the handheld device that has in a multitude of small ways changed our lives forever, not least by instilling us with the strange physical tick of getting a small screen out of our pockets every four minutes of the day and staring at it for no good reason.

Here, then, are the latest rumours for what the iPhone 5S might do and look like. We can’t promise any are 100% true, but they do offer you a rough glimpse of the future without having to sift through a thousand internet message boards.

1 | Forget typing your four number secret code in your phone 53,000 times a day – iOS7 will be able to identify you by your fingerprint with a new sensor. A bit like getting through customs in America, but less exhausting.

2 | Slow-motion video. In geek terms: the iPhone 5S will be able to record the live gig you're not watching, the kid's birthday party you've been made to attend or the moment your dog accidently walked around in your shoes at a rate of 120 frames-per-second rather than 30.

3 | Thumbs feeling tired? Apparently you can now skim across pages on the iPhone 5S using head movements, meaning browsing your phone while holding an umbrella becomes suddenly possible, even if people are crossing the road to avoid you.

4 | Finding your way to a friend’s party or the last tube home in the dark without inviting the word’s street muggers to intervene will be easy with a new ‘night mode’ in Maps, that responds to ambient light when you use it in the dark.

5 | Lastly, it is rumoured that the new iPhone 5S will come in three new colours: gold, bronze or champagne. All of which, let’s be honest, sound fairly hideous.
