The smartwatch craze is no longer the domain of tech companies, with Swiss watch brand Mondaine getting in on the action with their Helvetica No.1 Horological Smartwatch, set to preview at Baselworld 2015.
Known for their 1986 Mondaine/SMM Swiss Railways watch, the designers have long been the go-to brand for simple yet sophisticated design, and their move into the smartwatch arena signals that it's not just Apple who are taking wearable tech seriously.
Based on the classic Mondaine Helvetica Bold, the appeal here is the small details, such as the sub dial at six o’clock, which provides an analogue representation of the smart tech inside – including activity tracking, sleep monitoring, Get Active alerts and personalised fitness coaching.
Meanwhile, the brushed matt steel case, white dial, sapphire crystal and leather strap mark this as something a cut above the usual bright, plastic smartwatches currently on the market.
The new watch will link to your smartphone or tablet via the soon to be released app, running on the MotionX horological smartwatch platform with your data safely backed up in the MotionX cloud.
Speaking on the release, Mondaine CEO Andre Bernheim said, "This is the first-ever Swiss-made horological smartwatch. It is a world first and Mondaine is proud to be at the forefront of this new technology."
While the tech looks set to match anything else on the market, looks-wise, Mondaine have created a watch that we'd be happy to wear with any suit. Hopefully it's the first of many.
