Lazarides, the art gallery that saw the commercial potential in Banksy, has another creative trick up its sleeve. This is that Johnnie Sapong, a star in the hairdressing firmament, works out of a quiet room hidden at the top floor of its central London town house.
Aside from the quality of his cuts the other great attraction of going to see Sapong is the serene atmosphere in his studio – he works alone and sees one client at a time. This, naturally, is reflected in his chunky, not to say extraordinary, prices.
Sapong, who’s hard to age under the voluminous woolly hat that contains his dreadlocks, has been cutting hair professionally since the Eighties. Over the years he’s accrued a peerless client list, which currently includes Bryan Ferry, Jude Law, Orlando Bloom and Justin Timberlake, and we too can attest to his skill with the scissors. He currently favours a contemporary short back and sides, as worn by actor Andrew Garfield, for its “air of refinement.” £420 for a consultation, www.johnniesapong.com
