How to get an upgrade

If you want to turn left instead of right on your next flight, you'll need to follow a few simple rules:

1 Dress well. If you look like you belong in first class, they will be more likely to upgrade you. Also, take your frequent-flyer card to prove your loyalty to the company.

2 If you book through a travel agent ask them to add a comment such as “Other Significant Information” (OSI) to your ticket as this could indicate to airline staff you are a VIP.

3 Most check-in staff can’t upgrade you, but ask whether they can add a code to your ticket that signifies to the gate agents you are potentially eligible for an upgrade.

4 If you were late because of a connecting flight with a competitor — tell the check-in staff. They’ll want to impress so may add the code.

5 If your flight is overbooked, volunteer to be “bumped up”.

6 Wander into business or first. If there are seats spare, ask whether you can move.

7 Or you could, you know, buy a first-class ticket.
