It’s a sad fact that we can’t all boast full heads of lustrous hair like James Franco or Boris Johnson.
In reality, some of us are born to grey prematurely, fight perpetual battles against frizz or, most unfortunately of all, lose our hair altogether. Unless you’ve got tens of thousands to fritter away on surgical treatments and scalp implants, it’s best to try and make the best of what you’ve got.
Here, to help you get started, we've asked renowned barber and men’s grooming expert Carmelo Guastella to select his top products to manage and control six prevalent hair types.
1 | Fly-away
Bumble And Bumble Surf Spray
Sea salt-based, this gives weight without making hair look greasy or wet; perfect for fine, fly-away hair. It’ll give a tousled surfer look, provide control and end floppy hair. Get that second-day-after-washing look in around 5–6 sprays.
2 | Wiry
Redken Glass Look 01
Thick, wiry hair usually looks dull, so this product is great for revitalising hair, giving it shine, gloss and getting rid of frizz. It also prevents hair from feeling dry and coarse. This repair serum is lightweight and non-greasy for a smoother finish.
3 | Long
American Crew Light Hold Texture Lotion
For long hair, the rule is to avoid greasy waxes; instead, use a product like this, which will give a light, natural look, slight definition and low shine. (She can stroke your hair without getting any sticky product residue on her hands, too.)
4 | Greying
Philip Kingsley Pure Silver Shampoo and Conditioner
A full head of grey hair can look great but yellow tones can make it look old and dull. Don’t be alarmed by the purple shade of this – the colour neutralises brassy tones for an age-reviving platinum effect. All you need is the Clooney tan to match.
5 | Thinning
Nanogen Thickening Hair Fibres
Great for disguising thinning hair, it’s used by many celebs (who’ll remain nameless). In 10 natural shades, the fibres instantly thicken hair with very good coverage. When I use this product on clients, they can’t believe their eyes.
6 | None
HeadBlade HeadLube Moisture Lotion SPF 30
For men who are bald or shave their heads, sun protection is the most important thing. This moisturising sunscreen is specifically for hairless domes and will refresh your skin after shaving – and it also dries to give a matte finish.
