Traditionally, the annual boom time for fragrance manufacturers is the pre-Christmas shopping frenzy when their products pour out the store doors, gift-wrapped, bagged and name-tagged.
The men’s scents most popular at this time are naturally at the heavier, winter-friendly end of the spectrum. However, once the days lengthen, warm, fresher, lighter aromas are called for.
Over the past decade or so, the manufacturers have strategically targeted holidaymakers at the airport Duty Free shops with a light, summery version of an already well-known and best-selling fragrance.
Typically defined by the addition of an aquatic or citrus note to the basic formula, these lighter versions of popular scents were ideal to take to hotter climates and, once back home, completed the set on bathroom shelves, sitting next to the originals.
This year, however, the big brands have decided what we want throughout the year is not diluted sub-versions of our favourite fragrances, but rather solid, masculine scents in a single bottle, which are designed to be worn as regularly as we want, whenever we want, whatever the time of year.
With this in mind, for this season’s five most notable fragrance releases, there’s not a summery note in sight.
