Unless you’re buying a car, a house or an ill-advised piece of exercise equipment (you know you’ll only end up drying your clothes on it), the most expensive purchase you’re likely to make over the next couple of months is a new winter coat. The good news is that the choice out there on the high street is now better than ever: it’s easy to find a quality outer layer that will last this season and beyond, for well under £300.

Look 1 (top) - The Trench

Great worn over woollens in winter, a classic trenchcoat is also a year round essential. This lightweight and showproof bright red version by British designer Joe Casely-Hayford for John Lewis is Affordable and a great way to be seen among the seas of navy and grey.

(Red trench coat with leather detail, £299, by Joe Casely-Hayford for John Lewis. Green tweed blazer, £100 blue denim jeans, £30, both by H&M. Mustard/green wool waistcoat, £60, by Joules Knitwear. White cotton shirt, £20, by Topman. Brown leather brogue boots, £129, by Jones Bootmaker.)
Look 2 - The Waxed Jacket

Nothing says "I'm ready for winter"" like a classic waxed jacket. This biker-style take from British designer Tom Joules has been given a new twist with quilted flaps on the pockets and shoulders, and some natty button fastenings. Wear with autumnal shades, such as burgundy, midnight blue and ochre.

(Green waxed Landsdale jacket, £260 by Joules. Navy cashmere roll-neck, £99, by Boden. Beige wool trousers, £35, by H&M. Brown leather Chelsea boots, £135 by Cos.)

Look 3 - The Overcoat

Knee-length coats were everywhere at this season's fashion shows. This bright orange H&M option will look great worn with autumnal tones. This colour is easier to pull off than you think- just keep everything nice and simple.

(Orange  wool coat, £80, by H&M. Pale  blue cotton shirt, £75, by Jigsaw Menswear. Burgundy cotton trousers, £25, by H&M. Brown leather Chelsea boots, £135, by Cos)

Look 4 - The Bomber

The bomber was the Jacket to be seen in for summer, and it's no change this winer. Invest in a weather proof option like this blue wool number from House of Fraser. Great worn over  a grey suit or dressed down with jeans and a jumper, it's both  lightweight and versatile.

(Navy wool bomber jacket, £145, by Label Lab at House of Fraser. Blue denim shirt, £50, by Gap. White cotton undershirt, £75, by All Saints. Blue denim jeans, £30, by H&M. Brown leather Chelsea boots, £135, by Cos)
