The trouble with hats

We like hats, and we have to admit that Pete Doherty did a great job a few years ago of at least putting them back on the style agenda. However, despite their popularity among trendy young men so far we have seen little sign of them successfully re-entering the mainstream - maybe their presence on the catwalks of Paris and Milan will go some way to persuading grown up men that they can start to wear hats and not look ridiculous.

However, the shortfall between the theory (the admirable Ferragamo Spring Summer 2010 catwalk show, below) and the sorry reality (messers Jackman and Gyllenhaal in mufti) suggests that hats go better with formal clothes than with casual ones.
