It’s fair to say that Frank Ocean performing in the UK this week is getting a lot of people very excited. When tickets to his Brixton gig went on sale earlier in the year, they sold out in nine minutes. When he announced a second gig moments later, that too was snapped up before people's eyes.
In a relatively short space of time, Frank Ocean has put himself forward as one of the most gifted singer-songwriters of a generation. Last year’s Channel Orange was as progressive and thought-provoking as it was sun-kissed and radio friendly; his collaborations with Andre 3000, producing credits with Pharell and guest spots on Kanye and Jay-Z’s hip hop juggernaut Watch The Throne all proved one thing – that the biggest tastemakers in the music industry all wanted a piece of him.
Yet for all his klout as a musician, Frank Ocean has also carved out a reputation as one of the most stylist musicians of the moment, whether it’s name-checking Versace in ‘Lost’, pulling off studded oxfords at the New York MET Gala or working on his own collaboration with Band Of Outsiders.
