Wardrobe Essential: The Solution To The Work Bag Conundrum

There was a time when bags for men either meant a formal hard flip top briefcase or a bag for life to put your weekly shop in and your smelly gym kit. Well thankfully, designers have taken pity in our desperation to solve the male bag conundrum, but the choices can still lead to ample confusion.

Irish bag brand Stighlorgan (pronounced Still-orghan, the ‘g’ is silent) launched its first collection two years ago, from the Irish town where the brand gets its name.

Creative Director, Christian Bourke, one of the founders, says travelling around the world was a constant source of inspiration, from the random people you meet along the way to how they dress.

These observations have resulted in a solid range with notable details such as water proof coatings, embossed leather, waxed canvas, rope details and many of the bags carrying their signature pinstripe linings. For his own day to day belongings, Christian uses a leather Stighlorgan seanan bag – based on an old Irish newspaper bag, it converts from grip bag to messenger bag – handy for when it rains.

One of our favourites is the Kavan shoulder Tote for £59. Although not so practical for the hands-free needs of the urban cyclist, Bourke has their requirements covered too.

‘The amount of times - in every city - I’ve seen someone cycle past with a holdall worn as a rucksack... I had to design something around that. So our Se bag converts from a grip bag to a rucksack”.

We can only applaud Christian’s sense of purpose. Men need practical solutions and a good-looking rucksack is no bad start. So please, if you’ve got this far and you still have your free gym bag that you also use for work, it’s definitely time for an upgrade.
