Style Tribes: How To Match Your Watch To Your Look

Swatch’s Gran Turismo Collection has something for everyone

As London Collections: Men amply proved, there’s more than one way to be stylish. Those options, however, can split opinion, which is why you often see fistfights breaking out across the runways as Euro dandies rile punks, and minimalists goad sports-lux devotees.

Hilarious as that may sound, it is, of course, not true. Although countless scathing glares are exchanged. One thing that unites each group, however, is a need to tell the time.

Thankfully, Swatch’s Gran Turismo Collection has a timepiece for everyone, regardless of outlook or agenda.

1 | The Super-Fashionista
You know the type. He never wears the same outfit twice, selects “statement” garments and speaks in terms of label, rather than look. Watches are a tricky accessory for him, because he prefers classic investment pieces which can also stand alone from his everchanging looks. The knack, therefore, is to go for a simple design, and he won’t get much more complimentary than choosing the minimalist black Destination NYC. It goes with everything.

2 | The Eccentric
He twins tweed with technical materials, wears mismatched socks on purpose and reads John Betjeman poetry aloud, whilst pumping his handheld pneumatic espresso-maker. And yet, somehow, he pulls it all off. He’s not mad, though he’s not all with it either, but like everyone else he still needs to be punctual. So, what does he wear on his wrist? The striking Destination Paris chronograph, of course.

3 | The Street Disciple
This fellow was among the first to adopt a snapback cap, sports rolled-up selvedge denim jeans exclusively and loses his mind if even the slightest scuff of dirt lands on his limited edition trainers. He prefers bold colours, camouflage-print painter’s coats and graphic T-shirts. You know the guy, right? The perfect watch for him is Swatch’s Black Nachtigall because it appeals to his yearning for urban accreditation and associated penchant for bling.

4 | The Classicist
Never seen without a three-piece suit, sock suspenders, cravat, wingtip brogues and trilby, some might say he overdresses. He, however, is adamant it’s the correct way all men should dress, at all times. In his defence, the Classicist appreciates craftsmanship and heritage – as should we all – though he could do with losing the trilby. He needs a timepiece that reflects his regal aesthetic. The combination of brown crocodile-print leather strap, dazzling blue dial and chronograph movement of the elegant Destination London will do nicely.

5 | The Lumbersexual
What’s that coming out of the woods? No, it’s not a pouting yeti, it’s a man with a groomed beard, checked shirt and Redwing boots. And look, he’s carrying a puppy he saved from a burning building, ’cos he does things like that. Despite his passion for pomade, he is rugged and outgoing (or hopes he appears so), which his wristwatch must reflect. The Swatch for the job is the rugged Destination Madrid, arguably the most handsome watch in the Gran Turismo Collection.
