That's right, green shoes. One of the storylines in a recent episode of Boardwalk Empire centred around a pair of green shoes. Specifically, a pair of green shoes that a young wannabe lawyer wore in court while defending Nucky Thompson.
This being the 1920s (and a courtroom), the fact that he has green shoes is pointed out by a judge and used as a sign that he doesn't quite know what he's doing.
The lesson from this? There's a shoe for every occasion, so you might need more than one pair if you're planning on entering a courtroom any time soon.
While we might have moved on a lot since the 1920s, there will, thankfully, never be a day when green shoes in court is acceptable. But if you happen to be at an occasion where they are acceptable, here's three options:
1 Lodger Parker Derby (above)
The suede makes them more casual than the brogues in the episode, which means they'll look much better with chinos or indigo denim. (ASOS, £400)
2 Grenson for Barbour Brogues
A darker shade of green, you could possibly, maybe, get away with these at work. We wouldn't try it, but it won't result in immediate ridicule. (my-wardrobe, £350)
3 Car Shoe Driving Shoe
And finally, something for the man who wants to lounge in style. Keep these well away from anything involving business, unless you're aspiring to work in Monte Carlo. (MR PORTER, £240)
