No country for old boots

Now that the nation’s pavements are covered in decomposing leaves, and its parks are wet and muddy, it’s time to change gear (both literally and metaphorically) in footwear terms.

If there’s a better new shoe for autumnal weekend walks than Lodger’s Country Boot, we haven’t seen it yet. The eight-hole boot doesn’t just look the part, not least because the tan works so well with indigo denim, it’s also built to perform with a commando sole and storm welt to keep the water out. Yes the price tag is steep, but they should last for years and cheap shoes are, unavoidably, cheap in both senses of the world. £430, www.lodgerfootwear.com
